Low birthweight and adult insulin resistance: the "catch-up growth" hypothesis.

چکیده
Fetal origin of adult diseases Epidemiological studies have shown a close correlation between intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and the onset of insulin resistance, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, and cardiovascular diseases in adult life. To explain this association, the concept of re-programming has been introduced: intrauterine exposure to insuYcient nutrient supply during critical periods of fetal life would permanently aVect the development and function of the endocrine system, leading to metabolic changes, including reduced insulin sensitivity. 6 Although knowledge of the mechanisms involved in the re-programming process might allow new strategies for early prevention of long term metabolic disturbances to be developed, the pathophysiological link between fetal growth impairment and adult diseases is still unclear.

Antioxidant MMCC ameliorates catch-up growth related metabolic dysfunction
Postnatal catch-up growth may be related to reduce mitochondrial content and oxidation capacity in skeletal muscle. The aim of this study is to explore the effect and mechanism of antioxidant MitoQuinone mesylate beta cyclodextrin complex (MMCC) ameliorates catch-up growth related metabolic disorders. Catch-up growth mice were created by restricting maternal food intake during the last week of ...
متن کاملA Role for Adipose Tissue De Novo Lipogenesis in Glucose Homeostasis During Catch-up Growth
Catch-up growth, a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, is characterized by hyperinsulinemia and accelerated body fat recovery. Using a rat model of semistarvation-refeeding that exhibits catch-up fat, we previously reported that during refeeding on a low-fat diet, glucose tolerance is normal but insulin-dependent glucose utilization is decreased in skeletal muscle and increased in adipose tissue, ...
متن کاملDecreased Fetal Size Is Associated With β-Cell Hyperfunction in Early Life and Failure With Age
OBJECTIVE Low birth weight is associated with diabetes in adult life. Accelerated or "catch-up" postnatal growth in response to small birth size is thought to presage disease years later. Whether adult disease is caused by intrauterine beta-cell-specific programming or by altered metabolism associated with catch-up growth is unknown. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We generated a new model of int...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The study was performed to determine whether catch-up growth is associated with the development of insulin resistance and to explore serum endocrine markers associated with the metabolism of adipose tissue in a Chinese population born small for gestational age(SGA) SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We recruited 56 children born SGA with catch-up growth and 55 born without catch-up ...
